How to Join Cub Scouts

To join Cub Scout Pack 260, Brookline New Hampshire, the best place to start is to email the Cubmaster. You can also join us at our monthly Pack Meetings on the last Thursday of each month usually at the CSDA Cafeteria. Check the calendar to double check this location for this months meeting. A boy can join Cub Scouts at any age and need not progress through all of the Ranks listed below. He will join his friends of his own age. The only requirement is that he must first complete the Bobcat Badge which can typically be done at the first Den Meeting he attends.

See below for more information about required forms, Cub Scout ranks, and outfitting your scout.

CUB SCOUT RANKS

TIGER

Tiger Rank
Any boy who is 7 years old or in first grade can join as a Tiger. The Tiger Cub program is a one-year introduction to Scouting. The Tiger Cub motto is "Search, Discover, Share." The program transitions the boys (and parents!) to the Cub Scouting program, which lasts 3-1/2 years. Each Tiger Cub joins with a parent partner and forms a team. There are no more than 10 teams in a Tiger Cub group. Siblings are not permitted to attend the meeting, since they become a distraction to the team. Tiger Cub groups operate on a system called "shared leadership." Each boy/adult team takes their turn in providing leadership once or twice to participate in 18 "Big Ideas" with help from a coordinator. In this way, each boy has the opportunity to serve in a leadership role with an adult partner during his Tiger Cub experience. The Tiger group also attends the monthly Pack meeting. In the spring, the Tiger Cubs are inducted into the pack as Cub Scouts with a "cross-over" ceremony. By the end of the year they will earn their first achievement rank - Bobcat.

WOLF

Wolf Rank
Any boy who is 8 years old or in second grade can join as a Wolf. But first, you must earn your Bobcat rank. A Wolf den meets two or three times per month to complete 12 Achievements and up to 22 Electives so each boy may earn his rank and arrow points by May. The Wolf den also attends and participates in the pack meeting. In keeping with Cub Scouting's family-oriented principle, parents are encouraged to attend den meetings and required to attend pack meetings. Rank advancements are not given at the pack meeting without a parent or guardian present. There are preferably 8, and no more than 10, boys in a Wolf or Bear den, and two unrelated adult leaders. Siblings are not permitted to attend the meeting, since they become a distraction. However, parents are encouraged to attend if they wish to. Parents will be expected to volunteer to help with at least one activity in a den meeting.

BEAR

Bear Rank
Any boy who is 9 years old or in third grade can join as a Bear. But first, you must earn your Bobcat rank, if you haven't already. A Bear den meets two or three times per month to complete 12 of 24 Achievements and up to 24 Electives so each boy may earn his rank and arrow points by May. The Bear den also attends and participates in the pack meeting. In keeping with Cub Scouting's family-oriented principle, parents are encouraged to attend den meetings and required to attend pack meetings. Rank advancements are not given at the pack meeting without a parent or guardian present.

WEBELOS I and II

Webelos Rank
Any boy who is 10 (Weblos I) or 11 (Weblos II) years old, or in fourth or fifth grade, can join as a Webelos. But first, you must earn your Bobcat rank, if you haven't already. A Webelos patrol meets two or three times per month to complete 20 Activities to earn rank badges, compass points and the Arrow of Light. Webelos begin to experience outdoor activities, such as family camping. The Webelos patrol also attends and participates in the pack meeting. Parents are expected to volunteer to help with at least one activity in a patrol meeting, and will need to be involved during outdoor activities such as camping.

OUTFITTING YOUR CUB SCOUT

Registration

The following are part of registration in September of each year:

  • BSA Dues and Insurance (required)
  • Pack 260 dues (required) (helps pay for awards)
  • Boys Life Magazine Subscription (optional)
  • Rank Handbook (optional)
  • Pinewood Derby Car (optional)
  • Class-B T-Shirt (optional)

Tiger

As a new Tiger Cub, your son needs a number of new items that he will use for several years. In addition to the Registration Items above:

  • Item 84092* Blue Cub Scout Shirt. Typically short sleeve is best and your son can wear a Tshirt under it in the winter. This shirt will be used for 3 years so get one big enough that he can grow into.
  • Item 00143 World Crest Emblem goes above the left pocket on the shirt.
  • Item 16330 Daniel Webster Council emblem goes on the left shoulder. You'll also want a Den Number and the Pack 260 emblems which also go on the shirt.
  • Item 81391* Cub Scout Belt (your son will be earning "belt loops" that only fit on this belt)
  • Item 80871 Tiger Cub Neckerchief
  • Item 80870 Tiger Cub Neckerchief slide
  • Item 83892* Tiger Cub Cap
  • Item 55292* Red Patch Vest (optional - your son will earn many patches and the red vest is the official location for these)

Wolf

A Wolf Cub uses the same shirt and belt as he did in Tigers. But he will need a new Wolf Cap, Neckerchief, and Slide.

Bear

A Bear Cub again uses the same shirt and belt as he did as a Tiger and Wolf but he will need a new Bear Cap, Neckerchief, and Slide.

Webelos

Webelos is the transition to Boy Scouts. The shirt switches to the tan Boy Scout shirt. He will use this shirt for his final 2 years of Cub Scouts and the beginning of Boy Scouts so again it should be a little big to start out. You can either transfer the patches to it from the blue shirt or simply buy new ones.  The Webelos Scout will also need:
  • Item 00677 Blue Shoulder Loops
  • Webelos Hat, Neckerchief, and Slide
  • Item 00452 the Webelos Colors
  • Webelos continue to use the Blue Cub Scout belt as the Boy Scout belt does not fit the Activity Belt Loops that Webelos must earn. Note that you may need to purchase a new belt anyway as your son will have grown!

NOTES:

  1. Scout Uniforms are available at the Scout Store at Camp Carpenter which is fully stocked. Campers Inn in Merrimack also carries a wide variety of Scout items as do many other camping supply stores. Uniforms can also be ordered online at http://www.scoutstuff.org.
  2. Item numbers are for reference only. You may want to switch to a different size which may have a different Item Number. Item Numbers are referenced to scoutstuff.org but are also the same at the Scout Store.
  3. Details on how the uniform should look and where the various patches should be sewn on can be found in each of the handbooks. There are also MANY resources on the internet - search for "Cub Scout Uniform"
  4. Note that there are MANY accessories that you can outfit your son with. The list above is the minimum required for Pack 260. Please do not hesitate to contact your leader if you need financial assistance for these items. No boy will be denied the fun and friendship of scouting due to financial reasons.
  5. Experience with the iron-on patch holders has proven that they do NOT work. It is recommended to sew the patches on.
